In January 2023, I undertook the task of updating two FreeNAS servers to TrueNAS 13.0 U3. This transition involved several planned steps and meticulous execution to ensure a smooth upgrade process. - FreeNAS-11.3U3.2 to FreeNAS-11.3U5 (Completed on 11/18/23)
- FreeNAS-11.3U5 to TrueNAS-12.0U8.1 (Completed on 01/06/23)
- TrueNAS-12.0U8.1 to TrueNAS-13.0 U3 (Completed on 01/13/23)
2. NAS1 (Primary):
- Initial Version: FreeNAS-11.3U3.2
- Updates:
- FreeNAS-11.3U3.2 to FreeNAS-11.3U5 (Completed on 11/18/23)
- FreeNAS-11.3U5 to TrueNAS-12.0U8.1 (Completed on 01/20/23)
- TrueNAS-12.0U8.1 to TrueNAS-13.0 U3 (Completed on 01/27/23)
The Update Process
1. Backup FreeNAS Configuration
Before initiating any updates, it’s crucial to back up the FreeNAS configuration to ensure data safety and system recovery. Follow these steps:
- Log into FreeNAS.
- Navigate to System/General/Save Config.
- Check both checkboxes:
- Export Password Secret Seed
- Export Pool Encryption Keys
- Click Save.
- Copy the configuration file to a secure location, such as
/network/share/location/FreeNAS_Backups
.
2. Apply Update
With the configuration safely backed up, you can proceed with the update process. Follow these steps:
- Log into FreeNAS.
- Navigate to System/Update.
- Set the Update File Temporary Storage Location to a network share.
- Upload the required
manual-update.tar
file as necessary (located at/network/share/location/TrueNAS
). - Click Apply Update.
Conclusion
